    Toro is committed to the sustainable and responsible development of Western Australia's newest industry, uranium mining. Toro has an environmental policy which states, "We strive to support the principles of environmental sustainability and minimise potential effects to the environment." In relation to the plants and animals in the mine area, Toro's environmental objective is to maintain the abundance, diversity, geographic distribution and productivity of flora at species and ecosystem levels by avoiding or managing any negative impacts. To minimise clearing and land disturbance, Toro has designed the mine in a way that confines infrastructure to an agreed mining footprint. The only aspects of the operation outside of this area will be an upgraded road from the Highway; the haul road linking the Lake Way and Centipede deposits, a borefield and water pipeline to the processing plant, a gas pipeline and accommodation village.
  • Equipment and Infrastructure 2015-08-21
    Infrastructure needed for the Wiluna mine includes the mine, processing plant, packaging and handling facility, an accommodation village, a water supply bore field and pipeline, access and haul roads and facilities for on-site power generation, including a gas pipeline, communications and domestic and septic waste treatment. At the peak of the construction phase it is estimated that up to 350 people will be employed, and about 170 staff for the mine operation phase.

    Toro proposes to use an alkaline agitated leach technique to process the ore. The ore will be crushed and ground then heated up to 95°C in a highly alkaline liquid where the uranium is separated from the solid in a multi-step process. Finally the uranium is converted back to solid form (precipitated) from the solution. The end product, uranium oxide concentrate, is a powder.

    The Centipede and Lake Way deposits are calcrete-associated surficial uranium deposits. This means the uranium is found close to the surface and is often associated with a naturally-forming calcium-carbonate cement known as calcrete. The calcrete and the uranium are formed in shallow sediments typical of an old river system, at depths to 10 metres at or below the water table.

    The Wiluna mine will be a shallow strip excavation using surface miners, which are tracked vehicles with cutting drums to break up the ore, and heavy machinery. Blasting and drilling will not be required. The maximum mining depth will be 15 metres, and the estimated area of ground disturbance is 1530 hectares. Mining will commence ahead of planned production so that tailings cells can be constructed in the available mining void. Once tailing cells are constructed the processed tailings will be backfilled directly into the mining void. As each tailings cell is filled, it will be covered with waste rock and topsoil before being rehabilitated. This enables rehabilitation as quickly as possible as the mining and processing continues.

    Toro's Wiluna Uranium Project is set to become Western Australia's first ever uranium mine following final environment approvals granted in April 2013. Toro's Wiluna regional resource contains approximately 76.5 million pounds of U3O8 (as uranium oxide), sufficient resources to run the planned Wiluna mine for at least 25 years.

The aim of the beneficiation test work was to identify methodologies to produce a high-grade, low-mass uranium concentrate as mill feed, thereby delivering greater overall operational efficiencies and reduced costs at Wiluna.
