    Non-traditional sources of funding are being sought for the development of the best of the four major iron-ore assets that Cavalla Resources has acquired in Liberia from BHP Billiton. Cavalla COO Fidel Jonah said on Monday that the company anticipated that the iron-ore pricing environment would be better in three years’ time when its Goe Fantro project would begin making use of existing infrastructure to export from a functioning port 70 km away.

    The Liberian iron-ore interests of diversified major BHP Billiton have been acquired by Cavalla Resources, a wholly-owned subsidiary of investment holding company Jonah Capital, a private company with a portfolio of assets primarily in the mineral resource sector in sub-Saharan Africa. Cavalla has been granted the exclusive rights over the four exploration areas of Goe Fantro, Kitoma, St John River South and Toto, as Jonah Capital’s exclusive iron-ore holding company.
  • Aquila starts legal action against Mineral Resources Minister 2015-09-16
    South African exploration company Aquila Steel has started legal proceedings in the Pretoria High Court against Mineral Resources Minister Ngoako Ramatlhodi to protect its security of tenure. The company was seeking a judicial review of the Minister’s decisions to set aside Aquila’s Avontuur prospecting right, in the Northern Cape, as well as not to award the company a mining right for the Gravenhage manganese project. Since being granted the Avontuur prospecting right in October 2006, Aquila had spent in excess of R150-million progressing Gravenhage, delivering a 112-million-ton manganese ore resource, a 20.2-millition-ton reserve and a completed feasibility study indicating positive development potential.

    Dual-listed Resource Generation (Resgen) has pushed back the expected date of first coal production from its Boikarabelo mine in South Africa’s Waterberg region, as talks with potential financiers to secure the best funding package continue. The emerging producer in August entered into a R5.52-billion funding agreement with a financing syndicate, including Rand Merchant Bank, the Public Investment Corporation, the Industrial Development Corporation and Noble.
