Quebrada Blanca Phase 2 Information

  • General 2015-05-10
Quebrada Blanca Phase 2 is a development project that aims to increase Quebrada Blanca's copper production by more than 100% and extend the mine's production life by more than 30 years. The project is expected to include the construction of a new concentrating plant, a tailings facility and new pumping and piping installations for transporting concentrate; sea water intake and treatment plant (which will be transported to the concentrator through a sea water pipeline); and facilities to receive, filter and ship concentrate, in the North Patache sector south of Iquique. A technical evaluation and environmental, social and economic studies related to the project are currently underway and scheduled for completion in early 2012. Also in progress is the Social and Environmental Impact Assessment (SEIA) required for the project's environmental approval. The water source for the project Sea water which will be taken from the coast and pumped into the high mountains around Quebrada Blanca through a sea water pipeline will be the main source of water for the Quebrada Blanca Phase 2 project. To increase water efficiency, the design for Quebrada Blanca Phase 2 will feature water reuse mechanisms.
