    The Mmamabula Energy Project (MEP) is a 1200 megawatt (net) capacity power station and integrated coal mine project in Botswana that is planned to provide power mainly to South Africa. The Mmamabula Coalfields form the western extension of South Africa's Waterberg Coalfield, which contains approximately half of South Africa'’s coal resources, along with Eskom'’s 3,690 MW (net capacity) Matimba power station and Exxaro Resources Limited's 19 million tonne per annum Grootegeluk coal mine. Exxaro has also been contracted to supply a further 14 million tonnes per annum to Eskom's approximately 4,800 MW Medupi power station, now under construction.

    Dual-listed Resource Generation (Resgen) has pushed back the expected date of first coal production from its Boikarabelo mine in South Africa’s Waterberg region, as talks with potential financiers to secure the best funding package continue. The emerging coal miner noted on Monday that Ledjadja Coal, a subsidiary of Resgen, had agreed on the commercial terms with a financing syndicate to secure the funding.
