    The smelter was built in 1980 by Belgians and run by the state-owned SOMIRWA until 1985 when it was closed down. The smelter has since been privatised and after several years of restart plans, it was supposed to go into production in 2011. The normal capacity of the smelter was 10 tons of cassiterite per day and has been increase to 15 tons per day.
