  • Montero Evaluates Extensive Off-Shore Phosphate Deposits in South Africa 2015-12-01

    TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Dec. 1, 2015) - Montero Mining and Exploration Ltd. (TSX VENTURE:MON) ("Montero") has completed an initial review of geological data relating to extensive off-shore sedimentary phosphate deposits within the Greenflash Project area in South Africa. The Greenflash Project is the second phosphate asset being advanced with funding partner Ovation Capital ("Ovation") in South Africa. Ovation has committed to expenditures of roughly CDN $2.7 million to acquire a 10% interest in Montero's Duyker Eiland project. At the Greenflash Project, Ovation has agreed to co-fund due diligence with Montero, where, upon receiving a positive review, may elect to provide Montero 100% of the funding to outline a resource for equity participation in the project (see press release September 10, 2015). The Greenflash Project could potentially provide additional feedstock to a Fertilizer Plant envisaged to be developed in Saldanha Bay by Montero and Ovation.

  • Phosphate project to get under way 2015-10-16
    The prefeasibility study at mineral exploration and development company Montero Mining and Exploration’s phosphate project, in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape, is expected to start soon, with the goal of completion in 2016, after which, if positive, the project will go into a bankable feasibility study, Montero president and CEO Dr Tony Harwood tells Mining Weekly. Earlier this year Montero entered into an agreement with niche investment firm Ovation Capital to fund the phosphate project from prefeasibility study through to bankable feasibility study, says Harwood, adding that the studies will be towards the potential establishment of a rock phosphate openpit mine.

    Namakwa Sands undertakes the mining and beneficiation of heavy minerals. The operation is located on the west coast of South Africa and operates facilities at three separate sites. The mine and the concentration plants are located at the Brand-se-Baai, 385km north of Cape Town. Concentrate is transported to the mineral separation plant by truck. The mineral separation plant is located at Koeknaap, 60km from the mine. Here ilmenite, zircon and rutile are recovered before the products are transported to the smelter by rail. The smelter is based close to Saldanha Bay, 150km from Cape Town. Namakwa Sands operates two furnaces where ilmenite is smelted to produce titanium slag and pig iron. The Namakwa Sands operation started in 1994 and is one of the largest mineral sand operations in the world.
