    The future of mining giant BHP Billiton’s Nickel West arm appears solid as the company focused on extending its current operating life from 2023 to 2032, and sinks cash into maintaining its asset integrity.     Goonyella and Riverside opencut mines are owned by the BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) whose beneficial owners are BHP Billiton Ltd and Mitsubishi Development Pty Ltd. The mine is operated by BMA and is located 25 km north of Moranbah. Medium volatile hard coking coal is exported to India, Japan, Europe, South Africa, South America, Asia and the Middle East. Saleable coal production is approximately 10 Mtpa. Measured and Indicated coal resources for Goonyella are 1,444 million tonnes including Broadmeadow and Riverside (2003). Reported workforce for Goonyella/Riverside combined in 2003 is 646. BMA have recently announced plans to develop the Broadmeadow underground mine within the Goonyella mine lease.
