Ellendale Information

  • General 2015-05-10
Ellendale is a relatively small diamond mine in the Kimberley region of WA. It is known as the world's leading source of rare yellow diamonds, contributing 50 per cent of the world's supply. Ellendale is renowned for fancy and vivid yellow diamonds. Resulting from high levels of nitrogen at the time of their formation, they are greatly sought after for their rarity. Ellendale contributes around 50% of world supply. Since Gem Diamonds' acquisition of Kimberley Diamond Company, processing capacity has been enhanced and production ramped up substantially. In 2008 Ellendale processed 8.3 million tonnes, up from 6.3Mt the previous year, recovering 588,645 carats (2007: 475,306 carats) at a grade of 7.08 carats per hundred tonnes. Current resource statements for Ellendale show a resource of 98 million tonnes at an average grade of 5.1 carats per hundred tonnes, and sampling and exploration programmes continue. Many additional lamproites in the Ellendale mining lease area have been targeted for sampling and potential future development.
