    Brazil granted Vale a ten-year licence to operate a 101-km branch line connecting its $14.3-billion S11D iron-ore mine project in the Amazon jungle to the Carajas Railway, the company said in a statement on Friday. The Carajas Railway branch will allow Vale, the world's largest iron ore exporter, to haul S11D's output to the Port of Ponta da Madeira in Sao Luis, Brasil to ships that will load the product for export.

    Brazil's Samarco Mineração will be able to resume iron-ore mining operations should co-owners Vale and BHP Billiton come through with promised investments, Mining and Energy Minister Fernando Coelho said on Thursday. Samarco had operations halted last November, when a tailings dam at the mine burst and unleashed a mud flow that killed 19 people, left hundreds homeless and polluted a major river.

    The Clydach Refinery - affectionately known as the Mond - was built in Clydach, near Swansea, Wales at the turn of the 20th century, and started production in 1902. The plant, which was built by Ludwig Mond, the inventor of the nickel carbonyl process, was the heart of the village and one of the largest employers in the Swansea valley for many years. With improvements in processing and a rationalization of products, the refinery employs over 220 people in the town of 8,000 many of whom are pensioners and most of whom have had some connection with the Mond. Clydach was recently made part of the City of Swansea, Wales with an aggregate population of 230,000. Vale Clydach is currently proposing to build an Advanced Energy Project that will generate electrical energy needed to run the site in a more affordable and sustainable way.
