    The Boshoek smelter complex is situated approximately 21 km northwest of Rustenburg in the North West Province. The smelter complex consists of two 54 MVA closed submerged arc furnaces with charge preheating; a 520k tonne per annum pelletising and sintering plant based on Outokumpu technology; raw materials storage and handling area; slurry disposal area; slag stockpile area; storm water control infrastructure and runoff dam; dirty water dam; process water dam, temporary waste storage facility; provision for a railway siding; power supply facility; workshops; stores; chrome recovery jig plant and an administration complex. The Boshoek smelter was constructed by Merafe Resources Limited (Merafe Resources) in 2001 and successfully commissioned in 2002. The smelter now forms part of the Xstrata-Merafe Chrome Venture (the Venture) which was established on 1 July 2004. The Venture was formed as a result of an agreement concluded between Merafe Resources and Xstrata Alloys.

Despite monthly output at Maseve increasing to 1 893 oz of platinum, palladium, rhodium and gold (4E) and associated copper and nickel in concentrate, the Vancouver-based company advised that it has amended lower its guidance for concentrate production, on a 100% project basis from April 2016 to April 2017, from 110 000 oz 4E to 91 500 oz 4E.
