    Brazilian mining major Vale believes that the conclusion of the project finance for the Nacala Logistics Corridor in Mozambique and Malawi will be an important step in increasing the competitiveness of its Mozambican coal operation. This was affirmed by the group’s Investor Relations head André Figueiredo in a presentation at the BM&F Bovespa, São Paulo’s Stock Exchange and Commodities and Futures Exchange, late last month. Vale has developed the Moatize coal mine in Mozambique’s inland province of Tete. The mine produces mainly metallurgical, or coking, coal.

The mining group entered into a sale and purchase agreement with the Taurus Fund Management-led consortium in April this year. The terms of the transaction were confidential.

    Brazil's Vale has stopped transporting coal on the Sena railway line in Mozambique which carries coal from the interior to the Indian Ocean port of Beira after gunmen attacked a train, Mozambique's state news agency (AIM) said on Thursday. "The train was ambushed as it passed through Inhamitanga, in Cheringoma district in the central province of Sofala. The driver was shot in the back whilst a security guard received cuts from flying glass," AIM news agency said.

    Diversified major Anglo American on Monday announced plans to divest of its 70% interest in the Foxleigh metallurgical coal mine, in Queensland. The company has entered into a sale and purchase agreement with a consortium led by Taurus Fund Management. The transaction would be effected through a share sale in Anglo American subsidiaries, which hold the Foxleigh mine.
  • Vale says Mitsui has no plans to revise Mozambique coal venture 2016-03-31
    Vale SA, the world's No. 2 mining company, said on Thurday that partner Mitsui & Co Ltd has no plans to revise terms of a coal venture project in Mozambique, as reported by a local newspaper. Rio de Janeiro-based Vale said in a securities filing that a recent decision to reduce the accounting value of assets in the project "does not directly impact Mitsui's investment decision" in the project, adding that both companies are working to conclude long-term financing for the venture.
