    De Beers has sold $630-million of diamonds in the seventh sales cycle of this year. “We saw healthy demand for our rough diamonds in Cycle 7, as manufacturers brought forward some of their demand in order to cut and polish rough diamonds in time for the important retail selling season,” CEO Bruce Cleaver said on Tuesday.

    The construction of the R29-billion ($2.1-billion) underground development at the Venetia mine by diamond miner De Beers Consolidated Mines (DBCM) is within budget and developing on schedule, with the potential to see underground opera- tions deliver the first ore before the targeted start of production in 2022, De Beers confirms. The Limpopo-based Venetia mine – a large openpit operation and leading producer of diamonds in South Africa – accounts for about 40% of the country’s yearly diamond production. De Beers expects 133-million tons of ore to be treated over the life of the Venetia underground project (VUP), yielding an estimated 94-million carats.

    The final phase in the construction of marine diamond mining giant Debmarine Namibia’s new diamond exploration and sampling vessel is now under way after its arrival in Cape Town last week. The critical integration phase is now under way to have the purpose-designed, 113-m-long offshore SS Nujoma delivered and commissioned in Namibia’s Atlantic 1 diamond mining licence area in early 2017.

    Diamond major The De Beers Group of Companies and the Namibian government have signed a new ten-year sales agreement for the sorting, valuing and sales of Namdeb Holdings’ diamonds, representing the longest-ever signed agreement between the two partners. Namdeb Holdings is a 50:50 joint venture (JV) between the Namibian government and De Beers and is the parent company for Namdeb (land) and Debmarine Namibia (marine) diamond production.
  • Construction of Canadian diamond mines progressing apace 2016-03-14
    Construction of two Canadian diamond mines, De Beers and Mountain Province’s Gahcho Kué, in the Northwest Territory, and Stornoway Diamond Corp’s Renard project, in Quebec, are progressing fast, with both projects being either on or ahead of plan. TSX-listed Mountain Province on Monday said that the Gahcho Kué diamond mine was progressing according to plan with the overall project being more than 87% complete and on track for first production during the second half of the year.

  • Another diamond mine heads for closure 2015-12-18
    Following the closure earlier this month of De Beers Snap Lake diamond mine in Canada, Debswana’s Damtshaa mine in Botswana, co-owned by De Beers and the government of Botswana, is heading the same way from January 1. De Beers said in a statement to Creamer Media’s Mining Weekly Online that Damtshaa would be placed on care and maintenance and the Orapa Mine Plant 1 would be operated at a reduced level of production.
